Fairfax is an independent city within the confines of Fairfax County, Virginia. The City of Fairfax is the county seat of Fairfax County. The population was approximately 22,000 at the 2000 census. The public schools in the City of Fairfax000 are owned by the city, but administered by the Fairfax County Public School system under contractual agreement with Fairfax County. The schools include Fairfax High School, Lanier Middle School, Daniels Run Elementary School, and Providence Elementary School.
George Mason University, the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia, is located just outside the Fairfax City limits.
