Reston is a planned community and an unincorporated census-designated place located in western Fairfax County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, Reston had a population of approximately 57,000. The Reston Town Center is the focal point for business and transportation connections within the community, with a number of high-rise office buildings, condominiums, restaurants, a cinema, a hotel and shops. Reston also straddles the booming Dulles Technology Corridor and is home to the world headquarters of three Fortune 500 corporations (NVR, Sprint Nextel, Sallie Mae), as well as the United States Geological Survey, the National Wildlife foundation, and CNRI.

Reston was conceived as a planned community by Robert E. Simon. Founded on April 20, 1964, Simon’s 50th birthday, and named for his initials, it was the first modern planned community in America. Reston is the location for a regional government center serving citizens in the northern part of Fairfax County. The Reston Regional Library, Reston Hospital Center, and a modern homeless center, are located nearby. The Reston Police Station is part of the regional government center.

In the summer, free concerts are offered at Lake Anne Plaza and at the Reston Town Center. Various festivals take place at these locations also.

Also in Reston is the 476 acre Lake Fairfax Park. It is operated by Fairfax County and features boat rentals, a large outdoor pool called “The Water Mine”, overnight campground facilities, picnic areas, and fireworks of the Fourth of July.

The Reston Internal Bus System is a set of four routes that circulate within the community, using Reston Town Center as a transfer point. It is operated by Fairfax County’s Fairfax Connector Bus Service.

Reston is served by the Fairfax County Public Schools system. It has one high school within its boundaries, South Lakes High School. It has a number of elementary schools including:

Reston also has a satellite campus of the Northern Virginia Community College and the University of Phoenix.
